While that name has been floated around for a while now, the conversation reached a fever pitch when Twitter user LongSenasation tweeted out the name of Call Of Duty 2019. While some thought the tweet was a joke, Kotaku's Jason Schreier confirmed that he has heard the same thing. Other sources close to the situation have stepped forward to verify this information is accurate.
Considering that we've been hearing that the next Call Of Duty title will be a Modern Warfare game developed by Infinity Ward (the studio responsible for the Modern Warfare series), this isn't really a surprise. However, this name does raise quite a few questions.
We imagine that this game will be a reboot of the Modern Warfare franchise or otherwise a kind of follow-up/reimagining of the series in the style of God Of War. It's easy enough to rule out a remake of the original game as we've already gotten one of those. This could also just be Modern Warfare 4, but we tend to think that if it was that simple then the studio would have either used the number or gone with some other kind of subtitle that confirms its sequel status.
The good news is that some of the initial reports regarding the upcoming game suggest that it represents something of a fresh start for the somewhat stagnant franchise. We already know that it will feature a single-player campaign, but we don't know whether it will feature a new battle royale mode or any of Black Ops IV's other innovations. The Call Of Duty franchise could use some stabilisation considering that there are already reports that the 2020 title has suffered a significant change in direction as it has been passed between multiple development studios.
Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare (boy, that's going to get confusing), is expected to be revealed on May 30.
